Deacon Robert Peckham Virtual Lecture: “In Behalf of Oppressed Humanity”

I’m delighted to announce that I’ve been asked to give an online lecture on Deacon Robert Peckham’s life and works, by the Whittier Birthplace, home of John Greenleaf Whittier, Peckham’s famous portrait subject. Among other new discoveries, I will be unveiling Peckham’s letters to John Quincy Adams, America’s 6th president. It is on February 27, 7pm Eastern time. Zoom registration is required, but it is free. I hope to see you there!

The full description is as follows:

The early American artist Deacon Robert Peckham is best-known for his charming and likeable paintings, featured in museums across New England. But he left a historical impact beyond most of his peers. Through his portraits of like-minded friends, family, and neighbors, alongside historical records and newspaper ads, we can rebuild a visual legacy of Peckham's life, including his fight for temperance, the end of slavery, and free and fair education. And now, for the first time, we can read Peckham’s beliefs in his own handwriting: his impassioned letters to President and Representative John Quincy Adams.
